At Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hokitika, the environment inside has areas set up for children to explore and engage in play experiences with and alongside each other.  Children can choose from a wide range of resources and equipment:  there are quiet, creative, and imaginative play areas.   Learning occurs in all spaces at the child’s pace.

Our beautiful big backyard has green grass, climbing trees, barked areas, gardens,  and equipment specially designed to support children’s physical growth and development.  Tamariki choose from and learn to use a range of real resources such as saws, hammers, nails, gardening equipment, spades and shovels, learning about managing risk and making safe choices.

Tamariki here have freedom to explore, connect with other children and learn through play, working alongside each other,  and making choices for play that engage them with the people, the places and the things of our environment and community.

We are an Enviroschool, educating children, parents and whānau about the environment and our place and responsibilities within it. The Enviroschools principles focus on building sustainable communities, empowering children as leaders in our programme, growing and enriching knowledge of Māori perspectives, showing respect for diversity and culture.   We use innovative methods to teach our children about sustainable practices and becoming citizens for positive action.

We’re proud to be part of the Hokitika community, and prouder still to be West Coasters! We’re often involved in community events, and you’ll see our kaiako and tamariki out and about regularly in our town, exploring this magical setting in their role as caretakers (kaitiaki) of our environment. Our tamariki learn to ask questions about their world, and we help them to make sense of it. Strong links with our local primary school help to support the transition to school for you and your child, as he/she moves on from kindergarten.

We would recommend that you enrol initially for at least two full days, building up to five days at your child's pace.  This gives our teachers time to get to know your child and gives some consistency around supporting their learning.

Nau mai, tauti mai - come in and see us any time, we’ll make you welcome!

From time to time we have special offers, to enable more children to come to our not-for-profit, community kindergarten. But hurry, spaces are limited and these offers only apply for a limited time. Conditions apply.
